Cascine Roera
Piemonte, Barbera d'Asti, Italy
Cascina Roera came together in 2002 when Claudio Rosso and Piero Nebiolo, both from winegrowing families and already producing wine on their own, decided to join forces.
They're based in Costigliole d'Asti, right in the heart of the Barbera d'Asti DOC in Piemonte, farming around 7.5 hectares across parcels with very different exposures, altitudes and soils, a mix that adds real complexity to the wines. The vineyard is mostly Barbera, with smaller plantings of Nebbiolo, Chardonnay, Arneis, Cortese and Freisa, and one plot has been replanted using wild, massale selected vine material.
No herbicides, chemical fertilisers or insecticides touch the vines, and copper and sulphur treatments are kept to a bare minimum, only four or five applications in a normal year. In the cellar the same philosophy holds: spontaneous fermentation, no additives, and no wine bottled until Claudio and Piero judge it genuinely ready to drink, not a minute before.
The estate is moving through both biodynamic and VinNatur certification, a formal recognition of practices they say they've followed since the very beginning.
