Les Vignes du Vingabond

Florian Spannagel works a family vineyard that's been in Kaysersberg, Alsace for four generations, though the domaine's current name, Les Vignes du Vingabond, a play on "vin" and "vagabond", is very much his own.
 

It's a one man operation, just 3.5 hectares, though friends pitch in when it's time to harvest. Florian farms organically and biodynamically across a handful of named parcels, Altenbourg, Kirrenburg and Hochstaden among them, each kept and bottled separately as its own "vin de lieu", a wine of place rather than a blended house style.
 

His winemaking leans toward skin contact and patience: grapes are often picked and pressed together regardless of variety, left to ferment slowly with wild yeast, then aged in barrel on full lees for months before bottling, unfiltered and with little to no sulphur added. The results are wines with real texture, built to show off each individual plot rather than smooth everything into sameness.
