To use Florian's own words for this introduction,
My name is Florian Spannagel and I am based in Kientzheim, (Kaysersberg, Haut-Rhin) in Alsace.
In 2017, I took over my grandfather's small farm, which originally farmed 1.30 hectares of vines. I am the 4th generation and have been involved in the industry since I was very young. I know and feel the energies of each place. Today, I farm 3 hectares of organically labeled vines on very beautiful terroirs around the village, mainly on granite soils (Grand Cru Schlossberg) and clay-limestone soils (Lieu dit Altenbourg - Grand Cru Furstentum).
I am alone on the farm and I work everything by hand. The soils have been worked since the beginning 80% by horse. Only two passes per year. Light and superficial work which allows me to obtain today a very good balance in the vineyard, a good vitality of the plant and above all, a beautiful biodiversity which has developed for 7 years now.
I use a lot of herbal teas for phyto treatments which allowed me to drastically reduce the doses of copper and sulfur. I have an approach with biodynamics but not claimed. I decide to act according to what I see and what I feel. The harvests are obviously carried out manually in crates with a loyal team since 2017!!
My goal is to have a minimalist approach to the vineyard, but targeted and thoughtful with always the objective of having living and balanced soils.
In terms of winemaking, all the wines ferment thanks to indigenous yeasts, more or less time depending on the vintage. Long pressing, settling or not then casking. All the wines are aged in barrels on total lees minimum 13 months. No filtration on the wines. Bottling after the harvest. No other inputs than sulfites.
My goal: to have the same approach in the cellar as in the vineyard, namely, to listen and look at my environment and adapt to the situation. I want to make free wines that are as fair as possible, gastronomic, energetic and reflect as much as possible my places, my terroirs and my philosophy.
